27 May 2007 – Parkes to Cobar

The night in the van was the best we have experienced to date as it was fairly cold and the doona provided excellent warmth.

We departed Parkes at 8.00am to travel to Cobar. First stop was at the Parkes Radio Telescope (aka “The Dish”) where we arrived at 8.30am.The “Dish” was in operation and after a quick visit to the visitor’s centre and a rest stop, we were on our way again.

We then stopped in Narromine for a coffee and did a quick shop at Coles. We passed quickly through Nyngan. We started to see a little evidence of “the outback” with a change in the colour of the ground and evidence of wildlife with several kangaroos, emu’s and wild goats on the side of the road. It was actually very green with the remains of the recent rain showing through numerous large “puddles” at the side of the road. We checked into the council caravan park at Cobar (no booking) and were told to “go claim a spot”. The proprietor indicated that the park was quiet.

We briefly visited a local visitor’s centre but declined to pay for a surface inspection of the old mining operation. After returning to the caravan park, we noted that by the time the sun set. There was very little room left. We experience a video hook-up with the family at home. The marvels of modern technology and the internet! Tea consisted of steak (purchased at Narromine), onion and salad.
