2 June 2008 – Wycliffe Well to Alice Springs

It was relatively hot in Wycliffe Well last night but we managed to survive the night and fortunately, we did not receive a visit by aliens.  “He” did go for a walk in the dark armed with a strong beam and camera in search of the local wildlife.  “He” did manage to see a couple of dingos but they were about 50 metres away and outside of the night range of the camera.

We departed just after 8.30am and after a stop for morning tea at a roadhouse, we arrived in Alice Springs at 1.00pm.  Unfortunately our fuel consumption since Tennant Creek reflects the wind we have experienced during the past 2 days as we have been using just over 15 litres per 100 kilometres.  We hope to average mid 13’s. There is a lot of traffic heading north and it appears that the migration of the “Grey Nomad” is well under way.  Darwin and the top of Western Australia are the popular destinations.  There are also a lot coming from Adelaide that will cross the Barkly Tablelands and then head to the far north coast of Queensland.  Pity we are now heading in the direction of home as “He” is due back at work in a couple of weeks time.

The Stuart Highway is in good condition and we were impressed with the diversity of the scenery we experienced.  It is disappointing to note the amount of rubbish that is deposited on the side of the highway.  Fortunately, road kill has reduced.  For the past couple of days we have seen evidence of large fires that have scorched the ground.  Nature is hard at work rejuvenating the area.

We spent the afternoon shopping to refill the refrigerator and drinking water supply.  Our stay in Alice Springs is for 3 days and she is happy as we have an ensuite for the duration of our stay. The venue is another Big 4 caravan park and our second visit to this park.

Blue Snoopy will rest tomorrow!
