It was very cold in Alice last night and we went to bed early and watched television until 9.30pm when we decided to put the lights out. The alarm was set for 6.00am and we had vacated our site by 8.00am. Today we followed our checklist and departed without any problems.
Our next long stay is at Coober Pedy but we chose to break the 650 kilometre leg at Marla in SA, 450 kilometres south of Alice.
We arrived there at 1.30pm and after refuelling the motorhome ($2.16 per litre) we established camp and set up the satellite dish before having a relaxing afternoon. We had our evening meal in the local bistro and for the price, it was reasonable value. We have stayed at “Travellers Rest” before and this visit has cost us $18 for a powered site and the amenities are far better than some of the up market caravan parks we have stayed at.
Tomorrow we will have a relaxed drive to Coober Pedy with a detour via “The Breakaways” and possibly a look through the tails of one of the numerous opal mines we will pass by. We will probably go to a deserted claim and we will exercise care in not walking into an open mine shaft.
As we head south, the temperature is dropping and the cloud cover is increasing. We estimate that we have passed at least 70 caravans heading north today with the majority carrying tinnies on their vehicle roofs. It must be “barra” season.
We can now report that we have not sighted any “UFO’s” today. “She” has gone past the “spooked” stage now we are a long distance from Wycliffe Well.
