We awoke to a fine day in West Wyalong. After breakfast we searched several streets looking for a church where we attended a wedding in the 70’s. Unfortunately we could not find the church but we did see evidence of the significant rainfall over the past couple of days.
We departed West Wyalong and headed towards Rankins Springs, a small town we had visited 12 months ago. Much to our surprise we found another green town. The golf course that we camped at one year ago showed evidence of greening and other areas that were dust bowls a year ago were now green. We stopped for morning tea and then departed heading to Griffiths.
Griffiths is a thriving rural community that unfortunately has ties to the drug industry. It was the home of murdered identity Donald McKay and also the home of crime identity, Robert Trimboli. The history of Griffiths was recently retold in the television series,Underbelly.
As fate would have it, the first landmark we came across was the McKay furniture store. We did some shopping (Dick Smith, Lowes and Best & Less) before having lunch at a cafe. We called the Big 4 caravan park at Hay and booked for the night.
The drive to Hay was pleasant but the results of the recent rain soon disappeared and upon arrival at Hay, we learnt that the last rain had been a couple of weeks ago. We were actually told that we could not connect our motor home to fresh drinking water and a separate tap was available.
We cooked chicken pieces for tea and spent a fair amount of time on a video hook-up with our family back in Sydney. We could not connect the satellite dish (getting interference from an iron fence) and we had no television.
For the first time since leaving Sydney, we slept with the air conditioning unit running but only in fan mode. This worked and we had a very comfortable night.
Sounds like you are having a good time. Have you used the metal detector yet? Waiting for you to make your fortune. Great to see what you two have been up to. Keep well and safe driving. See you soon
