20 May 2012 – Albury NSW to Mornington VIC

We slept well with the temperature fairly low and the doona doing a great job to keep us warn. We planned to leave Albury at 8:00am for a drive we expect would take about 6 hours.

We had been provided with details of an alternative route that would avoid Melbourne and this required us leaving the Hume Highway at Benalla and then heading south via Yea and Lilydale and into Melbourne via the Yarra Valley.  The plan was sound and the route had been saved into the GPS, or at least we thought it had. We actually left about 4 minutes after our planned departure time and headed south in fog.

After crossing into Victoria we had a warning from the Iveco computer informing us of the possibility of ice on the road.  A quick check revealed that the temperature was a mere 3 degrees.  The fog continued on and off all the way to Benalla where we left the Hume and we encountered fog several more times including Bonnie Doon where we expected to stop for morning tea adjacent to Lake Eldon.  We cross a bridge and had trouble seeing the road and nothing of the lake.

We continue to Melbourne down the B300 and were amazed to see the results of the fires several years ago that destroyed Kinglake, Marysville and other small towns in the area.  Nature has regenerated all the trees but the tell tail sign of the fires were evident.  The fires experienced by Canberra destroyed everything, these fires simply cleared the undergrowth and the foliage on the trees and left the trees in a state where they could regenerate.

There was a lot of traffic in the Yarra Valley with the wineries very popular on a cloud Sunday afternoon.

We managed to follow the instructions for the better part of the trip across Melbourne but missed a turn and found ourselves on a tollway heading towards our destination.  We decided not to worry about the tolls and had a pleasant drive to just past Frankston where we left the freeway.

We arrived at our destination caravan park just before 2:00pm.  We setup camp, showered and dressed and were collected by friends at 4:00pm.

We were provided with a sightseeing trip around Mornington before returning to their home for drinks prior to dinner at a local Chinese restaurant. We slept well.
