It was trying very hard to rain when we departed the caravan park at 8:00am on Friday morning. As we headed into Nyngan, we noticed a road train with an inoperative left hand turn signal and informed the driver over the UHF. He was appreciative of the call and stopped to rectify the problem.
Driving conditions were again perfect and we had a straight run of about 100k’s south east before heading to Dubbo. We stopped at Dubbo for morning tea and made a decision that subject to fatigue, we would attempt to travel to our home in Sydney without another overnight stop. This decision proved very sound as we now know that the weather did turn bad on the following day and had we not headed home, the drive on the Saturday would have been in heavy rain.
Just on the eastern side of Orange, “She” noticed a kangaroo on the side of the road heading over a fence. All of a sudden the traffic behind us disappeared and all that could be seen in the side mirror was smoke from burning rubber. A short time later during a discussion with the road train that had been behind us, we learnt that the kangaroo jumped on the road directly behind us and managed to hit the rear of the next vehicle that was actually pulling a horse float. The smoke was from all and sundry hitting brakes. It was strange to see this happen as the area was lush and there was no reason for the kangaroo to be venturing onto the road. Just goes to show that you cannot take anything for granted.
We did refuel at Orange and upon arrival back in Sydney, our fuel consumption was a little over 12 litres per 100k’s. That was remarkable as we actually sat on the speed limit after Orange was that was 100kph at times. It proves that it is downhill all the way from Mt Victoria to Penrith.
