18 July 2013 – Alice Springs NT

We decide to minimise driving today following the long drive yesterday.

First stop was the Alice Springs Visitors Information Centre (this has moved into Todd Mall from the previous location near Gregory Terrace).

Next we looked at several of the art galleries and souvenir shops before heading to the “Red Dog” café for a late morning tea.

After that and before lunch we headed to the railway station to watch the Ghan leave (heading south to Adelaide) .

Immediately following lunch we visited the Alice Springs Reptile Centre.  This place is fantastic with a collection of snakes and other reptiles plus the resident salt water crocodile, “Terry”.  The owner, Rex, gave a talk about snakes in Australia and how to dress in the bush and what to do if you are bitten by a snake.  His talk resulted in some of the best “bush” advice we have heard in years.  This is a “must see” if you visit Alice.

Before heading back to the caravan park for a BBQ tea, we paid a quick visit to ANZAC  Hill, a lookout that provides expansive views of Alice Springs and the Macdonnell Ranges.
