For the first time since leaving home, we decided not to set an alarm clock.
Whilst eating breakfast, some research on the internet revealed that the RFDS base at Broken Hill was celebrating its 80th birthday and were holding an open day. The base would be open from 10:00am to 4:30pm.
Shortly after 10:00am we arrived at the RFDS base with two of our friends. The gates to the tarmac were open and we had access to both aircraft on the ground and also in the RFDS hangar. “He” was in airplane heaven with a grin so wide that the sun reflected off his teeth.
There were two vintage aircraft, a de Havilland DHA-3 Drover and a de Havilland D.H.89A Dragon. Also on display was a Cessna 180 (tail dragger) and a Tecnam P2008. There were also four Beechcraft King Air on site.
This was a special day for the RFDS and we were very happy to have been part of the celebration. We spent some money on 80th birthday merchandise.
We returned to our campsite for a quiet afternoon before happy hour late in the afternoon.
The night was cold.
