We had a cold night but no rain. Actually, wind replaced the rain.
It was overcast when we emerged from our caravan and a check of the weather forecast revealed a 20% chance of rain.
We had planned to go to Wilpena Pound and catch the shuttle bus to take us to a point where we could access a lookout. With the chance of rain in the picture and a wait of 2 hours between shuttles, we decided not to go.
We also planned to visit another gorge so with friends in our car and also another vehicle, we headed there instead.
The site chosen is known as Sacred Canyon. From the main road we had a 13k drive on a gravel road. As a result of recent rain, there were patches of water across the road and this provided a heap of amusement for both cars as it was virtually impossible to travel of the rain without splashing through the water. There was also a large number of wildlife (kangaroo and emu) close to the road.
We had a walk of 200 metres into the canyon and that involved rock climbing and the negotiation of small pools of water. The reward was a view of ancient aboriginal arts carved into the walls of the canyon.
On our return journey, we came across a family of emu bathing in a large pool of water on the edge of the road. We stopped and took photographs.
We paid a visit to the old Wilpena Homestead before returning to our campsite for lunch.
“He” spent part of the afternoon cleaning mud from windows, lights and the steps on the side of the Navara. The Navara really needs a good wash as it currently must be carrying several kilos of mud.
After happy hour we all retreated for the night. It looks like winter has finally arrived as under clear skies it is extremely cold.
