24 June 2016 – Materanka to Katherine NT

The further north we travel, the hotter the temperature becomes.  We are in the middle of winter and the daytime temperature is reaching 34c.  There is some relief overnight but our air-conditioning helps considerably.  Our refrigerator is only just coping with the temperature and we are very conscious of what food we store.

Last night was warm.  With vents open we almost had a comfortable night.  When we awoke it was warm and overcast.  Vests and jackets are now a thing of the past with shorts and T-shirts the go.

As we only had a short distance to travel, we were in no hurry to leave but were still ready before 9:00am.  As we left the park, “He” suddenly realised we needed fuel.  We still only have a range of 400k’s and it seems like we are refuelling all the time, which we are.

Other than one dim-witted idiot passing on a left curve over double lines and then attempting to pass us when there was a car coming towards us (probably 300m away), the trip through to Katherine was uneventful.  Conditions were perfect for driving and showed in the fuel consumption of less than 15 litres per 100k’s, the best consumption so far on this trip.

We arrived early at our overnight stay and were able to get in.

We had lunch at Maccas and then shopped.  “She” was able to wash during the afternoon with most of the washing dry before tea.

We had a long happy hour before tea.

All of the group is now together.  We have booked a sunrise cruise on Katherine Gorge on Sunday morning before we vacate the caravan park and continue our trip further north.
