30 June 2016 – Darwin NT

We planned to use today to have a quick look around Darwin before making an afternoon and evening visit to the Mindil Markets.

First stop was to purchase an air compressor capable of inflating the tyres on both the Navara and the caravan within a reasonable time period.

Next stop was the Darwin waterfront including the harbour and then north to Mendil Beach and beyond.  We stopped for fish and chips for lunch.

A stop was made at Coles before we returned to our caravan to prepare for the visit to the markets.

We arrived at the markets around 4.15pm.  Parking was difficult but we managed to get a spot near the main road.  Before the crowd arrived, we were able to see most of the market and purchase a couple of souvenirs.

We were surprised that the majority of the market consisted of either food or clothing stores.  Later “She” agreed that there was very little for the blokes.

We ran into some other travellers we have met since leaving Sydney and were able to exchange notes on various accommodation options.

At 6:32pm we witnessed sunset over the Timor Sea.  With probably a thousand other people, we watched the sun set.  It was special.

Returning to the markets we purchased food before returning to the caravan park.  At 8:00pm the temperature was still 30c.

We used the temperature to justify a very late happy hour which concluded at 10:00pm.  After returning to the caravan we inspected the filters on the air conditioning and the next 30 or so minutes were spent cleaning the filters and also the carbon filter.  They were full of dust.

Again the air conditioning remained on for the night but we redirected the air flow which did have a positive effect on the air movement and our ability to sleep.
