19 July 2019 – Lightning Ridge to Coonabarabran NSW

Today we had to say farewell to Lightning Ridge.  We had been invited back to Mel & Susie’s camp during the morning but had to decline.

We were up at 6:00am to a perfect day.  Even though the temperature was close to zero, it didn’t feel that cold.

As we didn’t have to pack hoses away, our departure process was only the inside of the caravan with only about 5 minutes required outside to prepare for departure.  We were ready to leave by 8:25am and departed shortly thereafter.

The road black to Walgett was as rough as the road to Lightning Ridge and on one occasion if felt like all 6 wheels had left the road when we went through a depression that was not visible to the eye.  We also had to dodge numerous road kill that had all found their way to the middle of the road.  Fortunately, the lack of traffic in the opposite direction made it easy to weave past the remains.

We turned left just short of Walgett and headed to Burren Junction where we stopped at a brilliant RV stop to meet our friends who had left on the previous day.  We enjoyed coffee and some eats and departed an hour after we arrived.

Next stop was in Narrabri where we had a quick late lunch at McDonalds, refuelled and then headed towards Coonabarabran for the final 120k’s of the days trip.

Overnight was at the John Oxley Caravan Park.

After the usual setup, it is currently easier for us as we cannot connect water, we enjoyed a happy hour before cooking our evening meal with our friends.  We decided to eat outside but a rapidly reducing temperature saw all of us head inside to our RV’s.  We ran our air conditioning in heat mode, and it didn’t take long for the caravan to heat up.  Had it been summer, we would have been complaining about the heat but with the temperature so cold, the heat was beautiful.  We had to turn the air conditioning off, but it was great to be able to dress for bed in a warm caravan.
