It rained overnight. It was not supposed to rain but it did.
When we looked out of our door in the morning, the sun was shining but there was cloud about. That was in the forecast but the dark cloud to the south was not.
We packed ready for a 9:00am departure and the entire group was ready to leave just before 9:00am. We made our co-hosts the leaders today and we decided to bring up the rear.
The trip back to Walgett was uneventful with the group maintaining an average speed around the 90kph mark. Of concern were dark clouds to the south and we finally encountered the clouds in the form of light rain just after turning onto the Kamilaroi Highway at Walgett. Had we been five minutes later we probably would have avoided the rain, but our timing resulted in us driving in the light rain until just short of our proposed overnight stop.
When we arrived at Burren Junction a couple of members entered and concluded that the stop was viable as we were concerned about camping on red soil after recent rain.
We all managed to find spots to park and soon we were enjoying lunch and then a quiet afternoon until we gathered for damper.
Burren Junction is a great placed to stop at with a thermal pool, a couple of toilets and a camping fee of $5 per night. Maximum stay is 21 days.
We witnessed a magnificent sunset before and during our evening meal and later in the night “He” had to go to the car and realised that it was the darkest night every experienced with hardly a light in view.
It was cold so additional blankets were added to our bed. To keep warm, we were in bed just after 9:40pm.
