27 October 2023 – Halls Gap to Braybrook VIC

With just over 220 kilometres to travel and access to the next accommodation not available until after 2:00pm, once again, we were in no hurry to depart.

We did leave just after 9:30am and when returning the key to the ensuite, “She” made mention of the floor only to be told that they required funding.  In our opinion, this is nothing short of “crap” as the truth in our opinion is that money is being put into the construction of cabin accommodation at the expense of maintaining RV sites at a time when RV sales are accelerating.  Park owners are more interested in the profit that can be made from cabins and the like.

We drove back to Stawell and found reasonably priced fuel at a small town called “Great Western”.  What a great name!

Continuing towards Melbourne, we were diverted off the Western Highway just short of Ballarat due to a serious accident that had closed the highway.  A b-double had slammed into a stationary roadworks vehicle.  Fortunately, only one person had received minor injuries.

Back on the main road, we stopped for lunch at Ballan, on the opposite side of the road from where we had stopped when heading to South Australia. We have discovered that many of the Service Centres operate small cafes and offer excellent menus.  No longer are you forced to eat McDonalds, Hungry Jacks or KFC.

We arrived at Discovery Parks Brayside just before 2:00pm and were placed on one of the small sites again.  We are directly opposite an amenities block as well as the dump point.

After we completed our setup, we decided to look for a Chinese take-away for our evening meal.  We found a site less that a kilometre away and headed there just after 5:30pm.  “He” was also craving a “long-neck” beer and that was acquired from a shopping centre we have visited before.

We paid $34.50 for our evening meal and that must be the cheapest Chinese meal we have ever purchased.  In addition to the two chosen meals, we purchased a special fried rice and were given prawn crisps and a drink as well.  And yes, the food was great.  We didn’t open the fried rice and that will be saved until tomorrow night.

“He” had a nap just after tea and that proved a bad move as due to the nap and the previous two nights, “He” was awake until 2:00pm before being able to sleep.  “She” came to bed early and read.
